      Mother Teresa Women’s University, a unique university of its kind in world, was established in 1984 by the Tamilnadu Act, 15 to promote research on all aspects of women. The university functions exclusively for women, by women with focus on Women’s Studies under its triple arm Teaching. Research and Extension functions.

      Named after a great humanitarian, Mother Teresa, the university is committed to development and empowerment of women belonging to all strata of society via education. As a major nodal center for women’s development the university performs the role of monitoring and consultancy along with its teaching and research to insist the need for autonomy and empowerment of women.

      In tune with the motto "Towards Equal Status" the University offers diverse course whose academic programme centres around women in the disicipline of Economics, Education, English, Family Life Management, Historical Studies, Tourism and Travel Management, Sociology, Tamil, Women’s Studies, Computer Science, Mass Communication, Commerce, Library Information Studies, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Specilization in Astro Physics, Material Science, Visual Communication, Bio- Technology, Information Technology, Management Business Administration and M.Ed. The University in a bid to provide access for women in the metropolitan cities has set up Research and Extension Centres at Chennai and Madurai.

      Publications numbering a total of 57 by the University press cover all aspects of development of women. These include a large number of research findings by the scholars of theUniversity.
